Lidl Ireland has opened the doors of its highly anticipated new store in Ballybough, Dublin earlier today. Dublin LGFA star and captain Carla Rowe joined the Lidl team this morning to perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a major milestone for the local community.
The new state-of-the-art development, located on the site of the former Annesley Motors showroom, represents a significant investment in the North Inner City. To celebrate the grand opening, early bird shoppers were treated to a special surprise, with the first ten customers through the doors receiving €20 Lidl gift vouchers.
To mark the store’s integration into the local area, Lidl Ireland has also announced a donation of €1,000 to the Ballybough Youth Service. This contribution aims to support the vital work the service provides to young people in the community, ensuring the store’s opening leaves a positive, lasting impact on the neighborhood.
The new Ballybough store has created 30 new permanent jobs for the area. The "concept" design features a spacious 1,114 sqm sales floor, offering a premier shopping experience equipped with self-service checkouts, long tills, Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) machines, and the fan-favorite in-store bakery.
Sustainability is a key focus of the new build. The retail unit incorporates an ISO 50001-certified energy management system, solar (PV) panels, a green roof, and LED lighting. The 47-space car park includes dedicated bike spaces and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
Speaking at the ribbon-cutting this morning, Carla Rowe said: "I am thrilled to be here in Ballybough today to officially open this fantastic new Lidl store. As a Dublin player, it’s brilliant to see this kind of investment in the heart of the city. Lidl has been a massive supporter of the LGFA for a decade, and that same community spirit is evident in their support for local groups like the Ballybough Youth Service. It was wonderful to meet so many local residents this morning as they walked through the doors for the first time!"
Brian Smyth, Regional Property Director at Lidl Ireland, added: “We are incredibly proud to unveil our new Ballybough store today and bring Lidl’s ‘More to Value’ proposition to the North Inner City. This project has transformed a well-known local site into a modern, sustainable retail space. This store represents a substantial investment in the Dublin 3 area, creating new local employment and providing a premier shopping experience with industry-leading sustainability features.”
Attending the opening was Lord Mayor of Dublin Ray McAdam who said: “This new Lidl store is a major vote of confidence in Ballybough and in the future of our inner city. It brings new jobs, a high quality sustainable development, and a clear commitment to the local community. Lidl’s €1000 donation to Ballybough Youth Service is a particularly welcome gesture and shows the kind of positive local partnership that can make a real difference. This is a very good day for Ballybough.”
Since opening its first Dublin store in Blanchardstown in 2001, Lidl now employs more than 1,400 people across over 50 stores in the Dublin area. In 2025 alone, Lidl Ireland procured €826 million worth of goods and services from 630 suppliers across the county, including local favorites like Naked Bakes.
Lidl Ireland was recently named a ‘Top Employer’ for 2026—the sixth year running—and continues to lead the industry in value and sustainability, ranking as the #1 Value for Money Organisation in the 2025 RepTrak Ireland study.
The opening of the new Ballybough store in Dublin expands Lidl's network to 191 stores in the Republic of Ireland and 235 stores across the island of Ireland.
Lidl Ballybough is now open daily: Monday – Saturday 8:00am – 10:00pm, and Sunday 9:00am – 9:00pm.
