New contract sees Lidl serve up 100% Irish soft bake cookies at its in-store bakery with new and improved recipe from Dublin- based bakery manufacturer

Lidl Ireland has awarded Dublin-based bakery manufacturer Golden Bake an expanded supply deal worth €6 million to supply its much-loved in-store bakery with three flavours of soft bake cookies.

The deal sees the popular bakery item, previously sourced internationally, replaced with a new and improved recipe produced locally in Dublin, underscoring the retailer’s commitment to supporting its growing network of almost 1,800 Irish producers and business partners. Golden Bake’s cookies will also be available at Lidl stores across Italy and the Czech Republic early next year as part of an export deal secured as part of the contract, bringing a taste of home to international audiences.

Established in 1987, Golden Bake is the largest producer of fine puff pastry and ready-to-bake goodies in Ireland, operating from its site in Coolock, County Dublin to produce a wide range of treats, from light and flaky Jambons® and sausage rolls to crumbly cookies.

The new contract with Ireland’s leading discount supermarket retailer is the largest value contract yet for Golden Bake, having grown from supplying Lidl with just one product line in 2018, to growing its contract value in the last year alone from €1 million to a tasty €6 million.

Its latest line will see Golden Bake’s white chocolate, double chocolate and triple chocolate cookies sold in Lidl’s 220 stores across the island of Ireland from next month, priced at €2.39 for a bag of four cookies, freshly baked in-store every day.

Robin Jones, CEO of Golden Bake said:

“At Golden Bake, we pride ourselves on producing the highest quality range of baked goods in Ireland, utilising locally sourced ingredients where possible and decadent recipes for unbeatable taste. We’re thrilled to secure our biggest supply deal yet with Lidl and to expand our product range to include freshly baked cookies which we know are a real hit with Lidl’s customers across the island of Ireland.

We’ve been working closely with Lidl over the last six years and in that time we’ve been lucky to grow our range and expand into new areas. As a retailer committed to working with Irish suppliers, it’s been great to work with Lidl on replacing one of its most popular product lines with our own offering and to have that true partnership approach, working with us and being open to new innovations to deliver the best quality products that customers really want.”

In the last number of years, Golden Bake has invested in innovative new technology to meet increasing production demands with a focus on sustainability, whilst maintaining high quality output. Golden Bake has recently completed a €10m investment, which will both increase its manufacturing capacity and reduce its carbon footprint by over 50 tonnes per annum.

Ciara Moran, Buyer at Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland said:

“Golden Bake has been a valued partner to Lidl for the last six years and we’re delighted to play our part in their continued growth and success. As a retailer committed to supporting the local agri-food sector, we always looking to how we can grow our business with local Irish suppliers where possible, so I’m very proud to confirm this expanded new deal with Golden Bakes and switch to a 100% Irish product which oozes flavour and quality at unbeatable value.

The new recipe has proven a real hit with customers already at our trial stores in the Mullingar area and all Lidl shoppers will now be able to get their hands on the new and improved freshly baked cookie range, available in the same three great flavours.”

Lidl is a major supporter of local food suppliers. Lidl Ireland procured a record €1.6 billion worth of goods and services from Irish suppliers and business partners in 2023. A total of €1.1 billion worth of goods was procured from the Irish agri-food industry, with €800 million staying within Lidl Ireland’s operations to be sold through its local store network and more than €300 million exported internationally through Lidl’s expansive network of stores showcasing the best of Irish produce on the global stage.
